Alternative Rock: (Such as Brand New) / Hard Rock/Heavy Metal: (Such as Nickelback & Black Veil Brides);
- Abnormal / unusual settings such as desserts or shipwrecks
- Smart/ smart-casual clothing/costume
- either natural or limited lighting - side-angled lighting is used to create/set the mood of the narrative and music of the video
- Establishing shots are either very intimate close-ups or high angled shots to create an awareness of space and proxemics
- Individual close ups of each band member (most being the lead singer) and then a change to wide shots to show the entire band
- Mid shots are used to good effect to show detailed movements of people in the video
- Long shots are used to inform the audience of the overall image & narrative of the video
- Editing is done to the same time as the beat of the song which acts very effectively
- Instruments are one of the most important conventions of heavy metal - an iconic symbol of good music
- typical look of a modern day heavy metal band. They all have long, rock star hair and dark clothing
- Music videos for heavy metal songs are usually in a dark, horror sort of area
- They usually inform a story line of some sort of pain, or death inflicting which shows the effects and consequences
- Metal videos usually have a lot of meaning behind them, as they are reflected to what the band/singer is going through
- The message of a music video is powerful, because there is a lot to understand from it, even if the message isn't always obvious
20.10.14 REFLECTION OF HOW CODES AND CONVENTIONS & PLANNING IS HELPFUL:
Looking back at the codes and conventions that I have found of the genre of my music video will aid me to sculpt my story board and narrative to possibly conform or subvert areas of the genre codes and conventions, this should prove useful to allow me to make a piece of film that is clear in its genre. If I have the codes and conventions clearly laid out then it will be easier for me to incorporate these into the planning process and will allow me to plan more in depth before I actually start filming so I can ensure that I am 100% sure of how the video will work and the codes will fit into this.
